ABCDOE Syracuse University

This pilot project successfully developed an integrated, whole-building energy efficiency retrofit for two student residence buildings at Syracuse University’s South Campus. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the project aimed to create a retrofit solution for very cold climates that delivers at least 75% energy savings while being fast to implement, minimizing disruption to tenants, and improving comfort, indoor air quality, resiliency, and architectural aesthetics. The project included the installation of a prefabricated exterior building envelope and an integrated HVAC solution connected to an optimally sized mechanical pod. The project serves as a scalable model for deep energy retrofits that can be easily replicated across low-rise and mid-rise buildings, due to its modular nature.
