Post-Sandy EDC
The devastating impact from tidal flooding caused by Superstorm Sandy was a wake-up call to those of us living in coastal areas. Cycle contributed to relief and reconstruction efforts as a practice and as individuals. Working with Rebuilding Together NYC, Enterprise Community Foundation, and others, Cycle performed post-flood damage assessment and provided recommendations and plans for reconstruction in hard-hit Red Hook and other neighborhoods. Damage assessments were utilized to file for disaster relief and reconstruction funding.
Cycle's work in this area yielded a detailed understanding of City and FEMA flood regulations and facilitated the creation of new prototypes for housing and commercial streets in flood prone areas. These prototypes included an inexpensive modular vernacular house that incorporates low energy architecture and a raised street that incorporates storm-water retention and recycling.
